Course Overview

Have any of your learners expressed an interest in studying health and social care courses at university? This course is an ideal first step for your learners towards a career in the health and social care sector, or as the first step towards a health and social care degree.

This course will help your learners to develop their knowledge and skills for working in the health and social care sector. This course covers knowledge and competency-based elements across all 15 standards.

Upon completion of this course, your learners could go on to study health and social courses at university, or they could study the Level 3 Diploma in Adult Social Care.

Section 1: Understand your role

In this section your learners will look at developing their understanding of their own duties and responsibilities, including their duty of care, codes of practice and regulations they need to follow, agreed ways of working, whistleblowing and actions to take if unsafe practices are identified.

Section 2: Your personal development

Within this section your learners will look at processes in place for personal development such as feedback, development plans, reflection and learning opportunities.

Section 3: Duty of care

In this section your learners will look at duty of care in more detail, including how this affects work roles, the duty to record and report, individual rights, managing conflict and responding to complaints and adverse events.

Section 4: Equality and diversity

This section will cover equality and diversity. Your learners will look at how discrimination may occur, reducing the likelihood of discrimination and legislation and support relating to equality and diversity.

Section 5: Work in a person-centred way

Within this section your learners will look at how to put person-centred values into practice in day-to-day work, why it is important to work in a way that promotes these values when providing support to individuals and ways to promote dignity in your day-to-day work.

Section 6: Communication

This section will cover the different ways that people communicate at work, how communication affects relationships at work and communication methods and styles that could help meet an individual’s communication needs.

Section 7: Privacy and dignity

In this section your learners will understand what is meant by privacy and dignity, situations where this could be compromised and how to maintain privacy and dignity in the work setting.

Section 8: Fluids and nutrition

In this section your learners will learn about the importance of food safety, including hygiene in the preparation and handling of food, the importance of good nutrition and hydration in maintaining health and well-being, signs and symptoms of poor nutrition and hydration and promoting adequate nutrition and hydration.

Section 9: Awareness of mental health, dementia and learning disability

Within this section your learners will increase their awareness of mental health conditions such as psychosis, depression and anxiety, dementia and learning disabilities. They will look at how positive attitudes towards those with mental health conditions, dementia or learning disabilities will improve the care and support they receive and what adjustments may need to be made to care for someone with a mental health condition, dementia or a learning disability.

Section 10: Safeguarding adults

In this section your learners will learn about their own role and responsibilities in safeguarding individuals, the main types of abuse, what constitutes harm, why an individual may be vulnerable to harm and abuse, possible indicators of abuse, the importance of person-centred care, how the likelihood of abuse can be reduced and actions to take if abuse of an adult is suspected.

Section 11: Safeguarding children

In this section your learners will learn more about the process of safeguarding children, including reasons to take action over the abuse of a child or young person.

Section 12: Basic life support

In this section your learners will learn about basic life support including resuscitation and the DRSABCD action plan.

Section 13: Health and safety

Within this section your learners will learn about legislation, policies and procedures relating to health and safety. They will learn how to access additional support and information relating to health and safety and how and when to report health and safety risks.

Section 14: Handling information

In this section your learners will learn how to handle information in a confidential and secure manner in accordance with data protection law.

Section 15: Infection prevention and control

In this section your learners will learn about the importance of infection prevention and control, including when and why hand washing should take place, personal hygiene and when to use PPE.
