Course Overview

Course intent

The intent of this course is to enhance awareness and understanding regarding employment as a personal assistant, it is aimed at supporting learners who may progress to, or already be providing care to individuals with a range of support needs.

This course aims to work with learners to ensure that they develop their knowledge of the skills and attributes that are required to be employed as a personal assistant.

This course can also aid learners with opportunities towards seeking employment, it can even help existing personal assistant to develop and enhance a current job role. Also, it could provide knowledge and information for anyone currently caring for an individual in an unpaid role and is looking for some training to facilitate this.

We provide learning and information that is useful, up to date and ensures you deliver a good quality of care to individuals with a range of support needs.

The course will look at aims for each individual learner and seek to ensure that you develop confidence in supporting any individuals that may present with health or social care needs.

This course also aims to encourage learners with progressing onto further learning, offering guidance and information regarding options for this.

Being employed as a personal assistant can be extremely varied as no two jobs are the same! It’s a very rewarding role as each individual employer can choose exactly how they want you to support them and you help them live as independently as possible.

You’ll be employed directly by an individual who’s managing and paying for their own care through a social care direct payment or personal budget.

This course is suitable for a range of individuals including:

• Anyone seeking employment as a personal assistant

• Anyone already working as a personal assistant but wishing to upskill and update knowledge relevant to the role.

• It is also suited to individuals who are caring for someone in an unpaid role and wish to gain knowledge around supporting individuals with personal care and activity.

Learning Method

This course offers a range of learning methods to suit individual learners and tutor will support throughout. There will be:

• Discussion based learning using case studies and scenarios

• Independent learning by completion of online modules

• Practical elements

During this course you will gain an insight into how individuals may have a range of support needs, you will gain awareness of how to apply person centered care and why this is so important when offering care and support.

You will learn that empowering individuals can promote their safety and wellbeing and understand the skills and attributes required to work effectively as a personal assistant.

This course is a blended learning course consisting of tutor led classroom sessions (via Teams online OR face to face in classroom setting) and independent guided study.

You will spend two sessions with a tutor completing training modules that link directly to the role and are designed to help build your confidence to deliver person centered care.

Learning content with tutor includes:

• Role of a personal assistant

• Safeguarding

• Infection control

• Equality and diversity

• Promoting person centered care

• Health and safety

Independent study modules to be completed online are:

• Food safety

• First aid
