Course Overview
Course Intent:
This 2 hour programme is aimed at adults who are in contact with young people either in a professional, voluntary or parental/caring capacity.
This course will raise awareness of some of the mental health conditions that can affect the wellbeing of young people.
This will cover areas such as:
- Anxiety
- Low mood
- Self-harm
- Eating disorders
Who the course is for:
This course is suitable for those who are who are in contact with children or young people in either a caring, voluntary or professional capacity.

No matter what capacity you are in contact with children and young people, you can join and increase your theoretical knowledge of some common issues affecting wellbeing and gain some practical skills to help in improving the situation and supporting wellbeing needs.
This can lead to further learning opportunities if there is an area of particular interest such as the Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Children and Young People’s Mental Health

What you will learn
Some practical strategies and low-level interventions such as:
- Mood scoring
- Low level Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) concepts such as body awareness and the connection between thought/feelings and emotions
- Solution focussed therapy
- Mindfulness and grounding techniques
- The course will also offer information, advice and guidance on where to go for additional support and information.
- The programme opens up discussion around mental health and offers IAG on where to go for additional support for a child or young person should they need it
How you will learn:
Learning will take place in a classroom-based environment by tutor led lecture, group discussions, demonstration, and practical exercises for helpful techniques such as grounding. It will be assessed informally by observation and work booklets. Learners will be able to take these away to use at home, but copies/pictures will be taken to evidence learning.
